The Akai Amulet
elven tribes of Ame
The elven tribes of Ame fit almost perfectly the stereotype of ‘the noble savage’, possessing considerable intelligence and skill but untrusting of the civilized world and unwilling to give up their traditional ways in order to coexist with the other peoples of Aka. The elves argue that their way is superior and they have nothing to gain from other cultures—except metal, a resource which they cannot mine themselves merely because of their location. This has sometimes brought one tribe or another into conflict with Samui, an event always ending with the humans of Samui retreating behind their fortifications and the other tribes shunning those who started the conflict until peace is restored.
The elven tribes of Ame hold to a strict caste system. Though all castes are considered of equal value and standing, the caste of one’s parents determines what role one will be trained in from birth and one’s eventual place in the tribe. There are three castes: Hunter, crafter, and shaman. In the event that a child is born from two parents of separate caste, the child inherits the caste of its same-gender parent. Once an elf of the hunter or crafter caste is beyond their physical prime, they become an elder and are no longer required to participate in the duties of their previous caste. Elders may instead take on the administrative and diplomatic tasks of the tribe, such as trading with the other bands of elves or Samui.
